Hardware integration
ROS 2 hardware integration starts with an interface contract
By NOVEMIQ · Engineering explainer
A robot driver needs an explicit contract for commands, feedback, units, operating modes, and failures. Transporting a message is only one part of integrating a motor or robot.

Understand the boundary
ros2_control separates controllers from hardware through command and state interfaces. That separation helps reuse controllers, but the hardware implementation must still translate correctly between software values and device behavior.
What to review
Write down which modes the drive supports, how state is timestamped, and what happens after communication loss. Validate encoder direction, unit conversion, and joint naming before attempting coordinated motion.
Put it into practice
A useful review artifact is a table pairing every commanded quantity with its measured counterpart and an owner for each fault. Test the contract with a simulator or mock interface before supervised hardware commissioning.
