Motion engineering

Before benchmarking robot motion, define the experiment

By NOVEMIQ · Engineering explainer

A motion benchmark is meaningful only with its task, hardware, configuration, measurement method, and limitations. A headline speed improvement without that context is difficult to reproduce or compare.

NOVEMIQENGINEERING NOTE 10
  1. 01Defined task
  2. 02Recorded configuration
  3. 03Measured trials
  4. 04Qualified conclusion
Illustrative architecture: Before benchmarking robot motion, define the experiment. Conceptual relationships only; not a deployed system, measured result or safety design.

Understand the boundary

Choose the question first. Planning time, tracking error, task completion, and settling behavior describe different parts of a system. Select a metric that answers the engineering question instead of combining them into one vague performance score.

What to review

Document the starting conditions, payload assumptions, software revision, and measurement boundary. Separate simulation observations from physical measurements. Preserve failed trials and explain any exclusions.

Put it into practice

Publish results only when the underlying evidence is available and cleared for use. This article describes an experiment design; it contains no measured NOVEMIQ results. Future benchmark posts should link their method and identify the tested configuration.
